Where to start with your search engine optimization keywords
Every site has a subject or niche in which it is written. For instance this site is about keywords and keyword research. So we would aim to be found for keywords that are related to our subject area. So we need to think about what we would consider the main keywords that will describe the content of this site:

- Keywords for search engine optimization
- Keyword search results
- Keyword analytics
- Keyword analyzer
Once we have our initial list there are several ways that we can expand on it. We can do an actual search in Google and see what else we see when we do the search. At the bottom of the page there will be a list of related searches that can be added to our list. By clicking on these related searches we will also be able to find another set of related searches which will add additional keywords to your list.
Also take note of Google suggest, as you type in each search Google suggest will make suggestions as to what it thinks you want to search for. These suggestions are based on what other searchers will have typed into the search engine so are a good guide as to what other people are looking for.

Find best keywords to target
Just aiming for the main keywords in your subject area and trying to rank for them is likely to leave you with no traffic. The reason will typically be with regards to competition. Even though the main keywords, such as SEO or Keywords may have many searches the search results are dominated by some long established and well respected sites, so trying to get a place on the front page of Google is going to be tough. It is often best to target what are called the “long Tailed Keywords”. These are longer phrases that typically get far fewer searches but are not as well targeted by the main players so you may be able to rank more easily for them. Ranking for dozens of long tailed keywords can be just as effective in drawing traffic as ranking for a main keyword for a topic but will much easier to achieve.
